It has been awhile since I shared a “Day in the Life” post with you guys and since I am wrapping up didactic year of PA school I thought I would share a “typical” day with you guys before my schedule completely changes with rotations … and those will be entire different posts. This was my day on Monday.
6:30AM – Alarm goes off. Since today is a later start than most days I got to sleep in a little bit longer than my usual 5:30AM wake up. I put on my sneakers and clothes and head downstairs to eat breakfast. Today is the usual – 2 eggs, bacon, fruit, and coffee.
7:15AM – Help Chris get the girls up but he is on drop-off this morning since he is off work. I put on my sneakers and head to the garage for a smoking leg workout that leaves them feeling like jello.
8:00AM – To to clean up the kitchen, pack snacks and a lunch, and hop in the shower. It’s supposed to be a beautiful 80+ degrees so it’s time to break out the dresses!
8:45AM – Hit the road to school. I always leave an hour early because in Savannah you just never know what to expect with traffic. Fortunately things are pretty smooth and I get to school with plenty of time to spare.
9:45-11:45AM – Emergency medicine class. We start off with a quiz over psychiatric emergencies and wound care. Then we dive into a lecture on toxicology which is really interesting.
11:45AM – My friends leave campus with me to go pick up my external hard drive from the computer place. They were able to save my data! We celebrate with Firehouse Subs for lunch.
1:00PM – Geriatrics is next up and the lecture is on the process of dying. While it’s certainly not the happiest topic to be discussing it is something that is important for all healthcare providers to learn. We unfortunately cannot save everyone and everyone is going to die at some point. But it definitely left me pretty sad.
3:00PM – Break between classes = snack time in the lounge. I have pretzels and hummus and a Diet Coke.
3:30PM – Clinical medicine is next up with OBGYN. We breeze through the power points and some board review questions before wrapping up a little early.
5:15PM – In the car and heading home! Spend the time catching up with my mom and sister. Since I have an hour commute due to traffic it’s the best time to chat with the people I love. Chris chimes in with stuff I need from the store and I make a quick stop at Publix for the goods.
6:15PM – Home and it’s dinner time! Spaghetti for everyone which leads to messes all around 😉
6:45PM – I put Bryn down for the night. Rocking her is one of the highlights of my day. Then it’s downstairs to finish cleaning up and spend some time with Em.
8:00PM – Em goes to bed for the night. I head upstairs to do some work on my computer and catch up on some things.
10:00PM – Lights out. I refuse to stay up past 10 🙂
There you have it! That’s a little bit shorter of a day than I usually have but that’s pretty much what it is like. If you have any questions about life as a PA student I am always happy to answer them!
