Hey there friends! I hope you guys had a nice Memorial Day weekend and took some time to reflect on the price of freedom. We had a really nice weekend relaxing as a family since it’s our last one for awhile. I actually took the ENTIRE day off Saturday from studying to do family things. And it was glorious.
I’ve been trying to format a post for you guys for the last couple of months because I had gotten quite a few questions about how breastfeeding was going as a “working” mom. When I saw the questions that Linz posted I perked right up. I think as a “new” mom it’s always really helpful to hear a variety of ways that things work for different people. One of the keys to navigating parenthood is knowing that there is no one mold that fits everyone. Instead, you can take bits and pieces from a ton of different people and meld them into what works for YOUR family. This is just what is currently working for mine. And that could change 😉
Bryn is going to be 6 months old tomorrow (hold me) and so far she has been exclusively fed breastmilk either from the breast or a bottle when she is at “school”. This is a fact that I am incredibly proud of since it was one of my own personal goals. This post is all about nursing from the breast and I have another post coming next week about our experiences with pumping while I am at school since my nursing journey is a healthy combination of both. I am going to use from of Linz’s questions and then throw in a few of my own for you guys.
How often is she eating during the day?
Bryn currently eats 6-7 times a day. At school she takes a 4oz bottle of breastmilk every 3 hours. I try not to give her more than 4oz at a time and it’s working well for us. She nurses when I get home from school and/or before bed depending on how tired she is. She also nurses first thing in the morning.
Where at night where do you nurse?
Bryn goes to bed by 7PM in her crib in her room. Sometimes she sleeps until 6AM. Sometimes she wakes up to nurse around 4AM. For those middle of the night nursing sessions she comes into bed with me and we side nurse and then co-sleep for the remainder of the night. Before she moved to her own room she slept in a pack-n-play bassinet in our room. But who am I kidding, most nights we co-slept 😉
How do you do middle of the night diaper changes.
Don’t exist anymore. Back when she was smaller Chris would change her diaper before handing her off to me to feed her. We did it this way so that Bryn and I could just go back to sleep easily. Since I was in school full-time we split the middle of the night duties since I also have to be on point during the day.
How do you go about nursing in public?
With Emmalyne I was a little more modest and used a nursing cover. Now my favorite way to nurse Bryn in public is while wearing her in the Ergo. I know I had some interest in how I do that so I am working on getting a post up for you guys soon. If I just need to nurse her I either nurse her discretely without a cover or use one of her Aden + Anais swaddle blankets to cover up a bit. I have nursed in so many places now that it honestly doesn’t phase me and I am a huge advocate for nursing wherever and whenever you need to. A baby’s got to eat yo.
How long does she nurse for?
I have been blessed with two very efficient eaters. In the beginning Bryn would nurse about 15 minutes and we alternated sides each feeding. Now, she can eat on both sides in less than 10 minutes and is a happy camper. Even as newborns both girls would be done within 20 minutes of starting. And both of them are in the highest percentiles for height and weight so I know they are getting the goods.
Does Bryn nurse on both sides?
Yes and no. It depends on how hungry she is. I always alternate which side she nurses on between feedings and try to get both sides in. However, I have a really good supply and I know that I pump 4-5oz per side every 3-4 hours so if she just nurses on one side and “drains” the breast she is getting what she normally gets in a bottle. If it’s before bed I will sometimes pump to even things out depending on how full I am on the side she didn’t nurse from.
Do certain foods affect Bryn’s tummy?
Nope. Again, super blessed. Both girls have never been bothered by anything I eat. Bryn has never been particularly gassy and is only spitty when she overeats.
Do you recommend a particular nursing bra?
Honestly – I am in the market myself for some new ones. However, I do LOVE the Gillian O’Malley nursing camis from Target. I wear them every single night to bed and have with both girls. They are supportive enough at night and easy enough to use while half-asleep. Bonus points because they’re affordable.
I’d love to answer any other questions you guys have so either leave them in the comments or shoot me an email at foodfitnessandfamily @ gmail . com.
