I totally didn’t mean to leave you guys hanging yesterday as I planned to follow up part one to Bryn’s birth story but having a newborn interferes with the best laid plans 😉 Thank you for all your comments on part one! Luckily, part two is where things start looking up!
If you haven’t read part one you really should – there’s not enough space here to recap the ordeal. When I left off it was close to 8PM and I was finally admitted to labor and delivery and was 4cm dilated. My new nurse Katie officially became my hero. Once we got checked into our room she immediately had the nursing assistant in to draw blood and get my labs going so I could get my epidural as soon as possible. Unfortunately the nurse blew my vein on my hand (same thing happened with Em – I have valve-y veins there) so I had a nice infiltration and bump. Once I got my IV in they pumped the saline fast.
Contractions at this point were still very intense and coming every 2 minutes. I ended up laboring leaning over the bed, on all fours, and that’s about it. Chris applied counter pressure on my back but it did nothing to relieve the back labor. At 9:00PM the anesthesiologist arrived and got to work. While getting the epidural wasn’t painful, it did seem to take longer and was more uncomfortable than the one I got with Em. Some of that might be because sitting up was one of the most uncomfortable positions for me. However, by 9:45PM I was feeling great. The epidural kicked in exactly how I hoped. The brunt of the pain was gone but I could still feel my legs and move them. As soon as the epi was in I told Chris he could run out to grab some food as long as he was FAST.
At this point Katie had me lay on my right side with my left leg up in a stirrup. Since Bryn was still really high in my uterus there was hope we could get her to flip anterior by putting me in this position and allow the contractions to do their job. I looked pretty funny when my mom arrived. Chris was still gone at this point (10PM) and I started getting a bit nervous based on how I was feeling.
At 10:00PM the OB came in to check me and I was 5cm with a bulging bag of water. He offered to break my water to get things going. I was happy with this route and so he did. Katie told me to let her know when I felt the need to push. Right about this time Chris came back to the hospital and I felt immediately relieved.
Not 30 minutes later I told Chris he had to go get Katie NOW. I felt the same way I did with Em when I went through transition on the epidural – shaky, cold, and I felt the contractions increase. Sure enough – she came in and it was go time! After assessing the situation she decided to skip practice pushing with me and immediately got the OB. It was really hard holding back while he got ready – I actually felt my body start to push on its own which is freaky! As soon as he was gowned up I was given the green light to push through the next contraction. I did and her head was out! With the next slightest push the rest of her sweet little body was delivered and Bryn Wakely was immediately put on my belly.
She was the sweetest little thing at that moment. She let out one tiny squeak and then just was looking around taking in the moment. She was just like “here I am world!”. We got a significant amount of skin to skin time before they got her vitals and cleaned her up. Bryn was born at 10:46PM and weighed in at 7lb 6 oz and 20 inches long.
The rest of our hospital stay was pretty uneventful. We finally got to our mother-baby room at around 2:30AM and were wiped out. Our hospital stay was 36 hours and we got to break out of jail at 10:46AM on Saturday. One of my favorite moments though was introducing Emmalyne to her new baby sister.
So a quick recap of the timeline:
- 2:30AM – Contractions start
- 9:00AM – Turned away from L&D; 2-3 cm dilated; contractions 5-7 minutes
- 3:00PM – Turned away from L&D; 3 cm dilated; contractions 3-5 minutes
- 7:00PM – Arrived at L&D; 3-4cm dilated; contractions every 2-3 minutes
- 8:00PM – Admitted
- 9:30PM – Epidural
- 10:00PM – Water broke; 5cm dilated
- 10:46PM – Bryn arrived
What freaks me out is how fast Bryn came once my water broke. I thank God that we weren’t anywhere else when that happened. We could have been in BIG trouble. From the time we were admitted until delivery was 2 hours and 46 minutes. I am equally thankful we didn’t leave the hospital a third time. What was awesome was pushing less than 5 minutes.
Over the next week I have quite a few things to share with you guys so please bear with me as the blog will be pretty baby heavy. I want to share mine and Bryn’s 1 week update, how recovery is going, how the girls are doing as sisters, etc. I also have some other posts that I want to wrap up from before Bryn arrived! Hoping to get back on a schedule soon but I know you guys understand that my time is a little occupied by two sweet girls 😉
